The French surf team meeting as been held during the first WQS 6000 organized in Newcastle, Australia by the WSL in the middle of February.
With surfing being an official olympic sport, one of the first decision taken by the French Surfing Federation has been to accompany our best french athletes. This decision aims at a better caping of our national best, to get them prepared and trained for those contests. After sending coachs during the end of the year for the juniors and some others little contests, I have been sent to Newcastle, with Stephane Corbinien, to cover this meeting.
First australian trip
First time in Australia, Newcastle is the first QS 6000 2017. Most of the best french surfers were competing, making this meeting more interesting with a complete french team. My goal was to film all the waves turing the training sessions so that coachs and riders can have a lot at them as soon as possible. An other part was about heat strategy. Everything need to be recorded to be studied afterwards.
In the end with a quarter final finish from Jorgann Couzinet and the win for Johanne Defay, it was successful. All the riders were happy to get those images to study their surfing, and the atmosphere was great. I’m hopping for this kind of meeting to be held more often troughout the year, high-level surfing asking more and more for them. While waiting, we’ll see what will happen during the World Surfing Games ISA held in Biarritz during the end of may. I’ll be there covering the french team path.
